MicroWorld - Hacking ‘Exploit’ Sneaks through Browser Vulnerability - 17 April 2006

Confuse the enemy to conquer them’ is an old time military doctrine. It’s about creating shock and perplexity in opponent’s mind to induce a momentary numbness and then ambush through, in that split second. By the time they are back to their senses, you have intruded deep into the enemy land. No one knows this better than Virus writers!

Security experts from MicroWorld Technologies inform that a new Exploit named ‘Exploit.JS.CVE-2006-1359.c’ is used by hackers to sneak into computers through a vulnerability in Internet Explorer.

‘Exploit.JS works by pushing an unexpected and unrecognizable HTML element that crashes Internet Explorer. Then the Exploit forces IE to execute a malicious program to infiltrate into the computer. Using this malware, hackers can remotely take over PCs and even conquer large networks.

The vulnerability stems out from the way in which Internet Explorer displays webpages that use unexpected methods to call some HTML objects. Microsoft has already identified this loophole and has released a patch for the same.

“This Exploit is a focused hacking malware that targets a specific vulnerability,” observes Govind Rammurthy, CEO, MicroWorld Technologies. “Many of these exploits can provide a superuser-level access to information systems. This way, an attacker can steal and manipulate business critical information of large enterprises.”

There are two major classifications among Exploits. One is 'remote Exploit' that works over a network or the Internet to zero in on a specific vulnerability of an application. Two, a local Exploit that requires prior access to the system, where it works by gradually increasing the privileges of the attacker within.

“Hackers work tirelessly to find out new vulnerabilities all time. A sophisticated Exploit can sneak through an otherwise perfectly secure application by forcing errors. The most effective defense against such attacks will be a consistent RealTime protection, where every file movement in and out of the system is monitored,” points out Govind Rammurthy.
